French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk issued a joint statement regarding the current political situation in Georgia:
Until Georgia reverses its current course and shows efforts towards tangible reform, particularly by withdrawing recently passed legislation that is contrary to European values and principles, we will not be able to support the start of EU accession negotiations.
Also today, a statement was issued by parliamentary committees of nine EU countries calling for an international investigation into the elections in Georgia and the introduction of sanctions against politicians and relevant persons responsible for possible falsification.
Europe and the United States are still refraining from congratulating the Georgian Dream on its victory in the October 26 elections. The event calls for a thorough investigation into allegations of falsification of results.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban became the only European leader to congratulate Georgian Dream. He flew to Tbilisi after the elections on October 29. Then the governments of 13 European states stated that Orban did not represent the EU in this visit.
