In Mariupol, the Russians want to “remake” a temple included in the Ukrainian Book of Records into “compliance with the canons of the Russian Orthodox Church.”
The city council reported that for this purpose, the occupiers sent “Orthodox volunteers” to the city, who will change the decoration of the building.
In particular, the Church of St. Peter Mohyla is included in the Book of Records of Ukraine as the only church in the world entirely painted with Petrykivka paintings.
Before the full-scale invasion, the temple was restored by volunteers at the expense of patrons. The building is located in the Primorsky district.
During the blockade of Mariupol in 2022, the temple became a refuge for civilians. After the capture of Mariupol, a commission from the Russian Orthodox Church came to the temple, which stated that the building of its decoration did not meet the requirements of the Russian Church and it all needed to be redone.
