The head of the Lithuanian government, Ingrida Simonyte, has appealed to EU leaders to create a mechanism for the transfer of Russia’s frozen assets to Ukraine.
The countries of the European Union must develop a procedure for arresting the frozen assets of the Russian Federation and send them to the restoration of Ukraine. This was stated by Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte at a conference in Lugano on Tuesday, July 5th.
“You (the government and society of Ukraine – ed.) Have not postponed the reforms until success, but accelerated them and achieved results and will rebuild everything better than before. Ukraine presented its plan , now is our opportunity, friends and partners of Ukraine, to show that together we can and move quickly from negotiations to implementations, ”he said.
According to him, first of all, the EU should generate funding.
“We must seek funds for this from our budgets or undertake collective borrowing. But the most adequate and fair way is to arrest and use Russia’s assets that have been chilled under our punishment. We will not be able to resurrect the people killed by Russia, but we have a real chance to force the aggressor to pay reparations.Because these assets are stored in our banks and moored on our shores .I call on the EU to impose sanctions and create legal mechanisms for the seizure of frozen assets, ”the Lithuanian head of government stressed.
Next, countries would need to provide plans on how they would contribute to the rebuilding of Ukraine after the war.
“We must draw up detailed plans for how each of our countries and organizations will contribute to the restoration of Ukraine,” Simonyte said.
The Prime Minister of Lithuania also added that the total amount of funds provided to Ukraine by Lithuania is almost half a billion dollars. This amount is aimed at disaster recovery, but Lithuania plans to continue to allocate funds.
Recall that the International REPO Sanctions Group blocked $ 30 billion of Russian elite assets.
In addition, it was previously reported that Canada had passed a law on the confiscation of Russian assets.
