Seven barangays were affected by the explosion. The evacuation of residents in other barangays located approximately 20 kilometers from the crater has begun.
On the island of Flores (Indonesia), one of the most active volcanoes, Levotobi Laki-laki, began to erupt. At least 10 people were killed. It was reported by Reuters.
According to Indonesian Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center spokesman Hadi Wijaya, the eruption began at 23:57 local time on November 3. The volcano threw a column of lava, volcanic ash and hot rock into the air.
“After the explosion, there was a power outage, followed by rain and heavy lightning, which scared the residents,” Hadi Vijay said.
He added that fiery lava and rocks fell on the nearest populated area within a radius of four kilometers from the crater.
According to local official Geronimus Lamavuran, seven villages were affected by the explosion. As of the afternoon of November 4 (local time), at least 10 people were killed.
The evacuation of residents in other barangays located approximately 20 kilometers from the crater has begun.
Indonesia’s disaster management agency has warned of possible flooding and cold lava flows in the coming days. Agency spokesman Abdul Mukhari said local authorities have declared a state of emergency for the next 58 days and are collecting data on the number of evacuees.
The nearest airport, located in the city of Maumere, is temporarily closed.
As you know, Levotobi Laki Laki is one of 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia. The country experiences frequent earthquakes as it lies along the Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean.
Let’s remember that last spring, in the most remote region of Indonesia, a volcano spewed lava and a column of smoke into the sky more than a kilometer, hundreds of people were evacuated.
A strong eruption of Mount Etna in Sicily was also reported in August. A fountain of lava erupted from the crater of Waragin and formed an ash column 10 kilometers above sea level.
