Russia has already paid “a spectacular price for Putin’s imperial stupidity,” the Pentagon chief said.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has not achieved any of his strategic goals in the nearly 1,000-day war in Ukraine. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin wrote this in a column for Foreign Affairs published the other day.
“After nearly 1,000 days of war, Putin has not achieved any of his strategic goals. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has not gone into hiding. Kyiv has not fallen. And Ukraine has not surrendered,” he wrote.
According to Austin, Russia has paid a “stunning price for Putin’s imperial stupidity.”
“Hundreds of thousands of Russian victims since February 2022 and more than $200 billion wasted,” the Pentagon chief said.
He cited data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, according to which Russia’s losses in the first year of the war alone exceeded Moscow’s losses in all its conflicts since World War II.
“Ukraine has suffered greatly at the hands of Putin. But as I saw again in Kyiv last week, Ukraine is standing firm – and even strengthened,” concluded Lloyd Austin.
As we already wrote, on November 1, the United States announced a new military aid package to Ukraine worth $425 million.
Earlier, Austin said that the DPRK’s possible military involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine could lead to new forms of support for Kyiv by Western partners.
