Kemi Badenoch was born into a family of immigrants from Nigeria. In the previous government, he served as Minister of Trade.
In Great Britain, members of the Conservative Party have elected a new leader. Former Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch won the vote, Sky News reported on Saturday, November 2.
The winner received 53,806 votes from Conservative Party members. Kemi Badenoch’s rival is former junior British immigration minister Robert Jenrick. He received 41,388 votes.
“It’s an incredible honor to be elected to this position, to lead a party that I love, that has given me so much. It’s time to give back,” he said after the results were announced, thanking former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunaka, whom he replaced as party leader.
According to Badenoch, the Conservatives are faced with the task of developing a clear political course for the next few years to restore people’s trust in the party and be honest about past mistakes.
In this regard, British Prime Minister and Labor leader Keir Starmer congratulated Badenoch on his victory.
“I look forward to working with you and your party in the interests of the British people,” he said.
Starmer and Badenoch will meet for the first time soon.
Kemi Badenoch was born in London on January 2, 1980 in a family of immigrants from Nigeria. He held the positions of Minister of Foreign Trade (2022-2023) and Minister of Entrepreneurship and Trade (2023-2024). As party leader, he will replace former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who led the party in 2022-2024.
In July of this year, the Conservatives suffered a painful defeat in the elections. Therefore, Rishi Sunak resigned from the posts of chief minister and party leader.
