India is currently working on a new class of nuclear submarines, whose main weapon is torpedoes.
India, in connection with the prospects of strengthening the presence of the naval forces of China and Pakistan in the Indian Ocean, is making efforts to increase the number of nuclear submarines. Defense news reported this on Friday, November 1.
It was noted that India is currently working on a new class of nuclear submarines, the main weapon of which is torpedoes. The country’s government has allocated $4.8 billion for the construction of the first two such boats weighing 6 thousand tons each.
In total, they plan to put six such nuclear submarines into service. Up to 90% of their equipment must be made in India. It is planned that these boats will monitor the activity of the Chinese Navy in the Indian Ocean, as well as the strategic waterways – the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Aden and the Strait of Malacca.
These nuclear submarines should be armed with torpedoes, as well as BrahMos missiles for attacks on ships and land targets. However, it will take years to adopt them.
At the same time, India is investing in heavy submarines armed with ballistic missiles. The first such submarine, Arihant, was commissioned in 2016. The second AFC of this class, Arighaat, entered service in August 2024. The third boat of this class was launched on October 16, the fourth is due enter service in 2025.
We remind you that the latest nuclear submarine sank in China at the end of May – beginning of June. Chinese authorities have still not acknowledged the crash.
