Election officials in Portland and Vancouver announced the arson of ballot boxes used to collect American votes for the US president.
According to CNN, hundreds of ballots were burned. Law enforcement officials said they found incendiary devices with the inscription “Free Gaza” on the ground.
Portland and Vancouver are located in the northwestern United States.
The fire occurred on Monday, October 28. Police have identified the “suspicious vehicle” as a 2001-2004 Olvo S-60 near a fire in Portland. They are looking for him.
On October 29, the New York Times, citing two law enforcement officials, wrote that incendiary devices at both fire sites bore the inscription “Free Gaza.” CNN contacted the police in both states, but they did not confirm this and said that the evidence was sent for examination.
Portland police spokesman Mike Benner said evidence – incendiary devices found near ballot boxes – suggests the fires are linked to each other and to a third similar incident on Oct. 8 in Vancouver, where an attempt to set a ballot box on fire.
Portland’s ballot box has already been replaced, and law enforcement agencies in Multnomah County and Vancouver, Wash., plan to increase patrols of ballot drop boxes in the area, Chief Jessica Vega Pederson said.
The US elections are scheduled for November 5th. The main competitors are former US President Donald Trump (Republican Party) and current Vice President Kamala Harris (Democratic Party).
