With the help of an anime character, the Vatican wants to draw attention to religious issues among younger audiences.
The Vatican has unveiled a new anime-style church mascot. They named her Luce. The character will be presented as a pilgrimage mascot at the Italian comics festival. The Vatican press service reported this on Tuesday, October 29.
Luce (from the Italian “light”) is depicted as a young pilgrim with a missionary cross, a staff and boots dirty from a long journey.
“The reflection in the doll’s eyes resembles a shell – a symbol of the pilgrimage route of the Apostle St. James to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Pilgrims along this route often collect shells as souvenirs,” the Vatican said in a statement.
The Vatican mascot Luce is prepared for the Holy Year 2025 – a global event of the Catholic Church, which is regularly celebrated every 25 years. Anyone who makes a pilgrimage to Rome after the inauguration of the Year can pass through the so-called Holy Doors and, under certain conditions, receive full absolution.

Luce will be shown to the public for the first time from October 30 to November 3 at Lucca Comics & Games 2024. It is one of the biggest festivals of comics, anime and games in Italy. The Vatican participated for the first time.
Already in 2025, a mascot like Luce will travel to Osaka and the World Exhibition and represent the Italian pavilion.
Streaming service Netflix has released a trailer for the anime series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. The plot tells about a mysterious Chinese artifact stolen by a thief from Lara Croft’s estate.
