US President Joe Biden called on Georgian authorities to talk to the opposition and “restore the integrity of the elections.” It was announced on Tuesday, October 29, on the White House website
Thus, the US President expressed “deep concern” about Georgia’s departure from democratic principles, in particular, the adoption of laws that “mirror Russian law,” which restrict on fundamental freedoms and diminishes opportunities for independent public organizations.
“The parliamentary elections in Georgia on October 26 were marred by numerous documented cases of abuse of administrative resources, as well as intimidation and coercion of voters,” he said.
Biden called on Georgia authorities to transparently investigate all violations, repeal laws restricting freedom of assembly and speech, and engage in “immediate and open dialogue with all political forces to restore the integrity of the election process.”
Joe Biden also emphasized that the rule of law and fundamental freedoms remain the basis of Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic future.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called on the West to put “intense pressure” on the ruling Georgian Dream party to “reconsider the election results and return the stolen votes.”
Earlier, the opposition Georgian political forces announced that they do not recognize the results of the country’s elections and announced protests.
