The Rolex worn by NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell during the Apollo 14 mission became the most expensive watch ever sold at auction, fetching $2.2 million.
The personal watch of NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell, a member of the Apollo 14 mission that walked on the moon in 1971, has been sold at RR Auction. Space.com reported it.
The astronaut’s Rolex GMT-Master set the record as the most expensive astronaut’s watch ever sold at auction, fetching $2.2 million.
During missions to the moon, NASA crews are usually issued Omega Speedmaster watches, but some astronauts also carry personal accessories. Whether Mitchell wore his Rolex on the moon remains unknown. The caseback of the watch is engraved with the dedication: “Worn by Commander E. Mitchell on Apollo 14, 1971. To Carlin – my son.”
The watch was sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by Mitchell himself. The organizers predicted that the final price would exceed $400,000, but during the bidding period, which lasted from September 26 to October 24, more than 30 bids were received, and the price rose significantly.
According to auction representative Bobby Livingston, this Rolex attracts not only fans of space artifacts, but also collectors of rare watches that took part in historical events.
It was previously reported that Winston Churchill’s pocket watch, given to him by Henry Asquith in 1905, has been sold at auction.
