The US State Department has agreed to the possible sale of the NASAMS medium-range air defense system and related equipment to Taiwan for a total cost of nearly $2 billion. This was reported by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
It is indicated that we are talking about three NASAMS systems, 123 advanced AMRAAM-ER medium-range surface-to-air missiles, AN/TPS-77 and AN/TPS-78 radars and other equipment. The prime contractor is Raytheon.
“The proposed sale is in the national, economic and defense interests of the United States by supporting the recipient’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military and maintain a robust defense capability,” the statement said.
It also says the sales will help improve Taiwan’s security and help “support political stability, military balance and economic development in the region.”
Earlier, US President Joe Biden ordered the allocation of $567 million for the supply of arms and military services to Taiwan. The media called this military aid package the largest in history.
