The Republic of Korea will never sit back and take steps to engage with the international community depending on the development of military cooperation between North Korea and the Russian Federation, the head of state said.
South Korean President Yoon Seok Yol said the republic will consider the issue of providing Ukraine with lethal weapons in response to military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. This was reported by Yonhap on Thursday, October 24.
The head of state made the corresponding statements after a summit with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Seoul. The two leaders strongly condemned North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia and agreed to strengthen their joint response to the growing threat.
“If North Korea sends special forces to war in Ukraine, we will support Ukraine step by step and consider taking necessary measures to ensure the security of the Korean Peninsula,” Yoon said.
He added that the country maintains the principle of not directly providing lethal weapons, but may reconsider the position and change it to a more flexible approach depending on North Korea’s military activity.
“The Republic of Korea will never sit back and take the necessary step by step coordination with the international community depending on the development of military cooperation between North Korea and Russia,” Yoon stressed.
Earlier, the media reported that Seoul might send its military and intelligence to Ukraine, and would also consider the possibility of supplying Ukraine with lethal weapons.
South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassador to Seoul, Georgy Zinoviev, to protest against the sending of North Korean troops to the Russian Federation for deployment in Ukraine.
Let’s recall that South Korean intelligence has announced that the DPRK has decided to send 12 thousand military personnel to support Russia in the war against Ukraine. We are talking about four brigades of soldiers, including special forces.
