In the Russian Federation, after the prisoners returned from the front, the number of rapes increased dramatically

In Russia, against the backdrop of the return of prisoners from the front, the number of rapes has increased dramatically. The We Can Explain channel reported this on Wednesday, October 23, with reference to data from the judicial department at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.

It has been noted that the increase in those convicted under the article of violent sexual acts committed under aggravating circumstances is particularly noticeable. The number of people convicted under this article increased by more than half (by 51%). If in the first half of 2023 97 people were brought to justice, then in 2024 for the same period – which is 147. Aggravating circumstances include crimes committed by a group of people, with the threat of murder , which causes severe health damage or infection with a venereal disease, the publication notes.

A larger increase can be seen in the heaviest part of this article. It is used to convict repeat rapists, as well as for violent acts against minors. Here the increase was 77.4% – from 71 to 126 convicted.

Under the article about rape under especially aggravating circumstances, the increase was 17.3% – 144 people against 169.

The channel claims that the increase in the number of rapes and other serious crimes in Russia is influenced by the return from the front of criminals pardoned by Vladimir Putin for participation in the war against Ukraine.

Let’s remember that in April last year it was reported that 17 thousand prisoners “disappeared” from Russian prisons during the war. Since then, this number has continued to rise.
