The United States is now communicating with partners and allies “about the consequences of such a drastic step and our possible reaction.”
The United States has received information about the training of North Korean soldiers on Russian territory. But it is not yet known whether they will join the war in Ukraine. White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said this in a briefing on Wednesday, October 23.
He noted that from early to mid-October, North Korea sent “at least 3,000 troops to eastern Russia.”
“We estimate that these military personnel traveled by ship from the port of Wonsan in North Korea to Vladivostok, Russia. From there, the North Korean military personnel traveled to several training centers in military in eastern Russia, where they are currently undergoing training,” Kirby said.
He also emphasized that although it is not yet clear whether the North Korean military will directly take part in the conflict, “of course, this possibility is of great concern.”
“After training, these military personnel can go to western Russia, where they will fight the Ukrainian military,” the White House spokesman added.
Kirby noted that the United States is in close contact with partners, allies and countries in the region “about the consequences of such a drastic step and our possible reaction” and informed the Ukrainian side of its view of the situation.
“Let me be clear: if the North Korean military were to engage in hostilities, this event would prove Russia’s growing desperation in its war against Ukraine,” Kirby said, adding that it “would be a sign of weakness, not strength, of the Kremlin .”
It was previously reported that the I Want to Live project has turned to the DPRK military. They were urged not to repeat the fate of the hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers who never returned home, and surrendered.
