Toledo received $35 million in bribes from Odebrecht in exchange for highway construction permits.
Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for accepting $35 million in bribes. AP reported this on Tuesday, October 22.
Toledo was sentenced Oct. 21 to 20 years and six months in prison in a case involving Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, a company that paid millions of dollars in bribes to officials and others across Latin America.
Peruvian authorities have accused Toledo of accepting a $35 million bribe from Odebrecht in exchange for permission to build a highway linking Brazil with southern Peru.
Odebrecht admitted to US authorities in 2016 that it bought government contracts across the region using lavish bribes. The investigation prompted inspections in several countries, including Mexico, Guatemala and Ecuador.
Toledo denied all the allegations. His defense will appeal the verdict.
We remind you that in 2019, the former president of Peru was imprisoned in California for drunkenness.
