The Israel Defense Forces nullified the observation tower and the perimeter fence around the location of the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Lebanon.
An Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer destroyed an observation tower and a perimeter fence around the location of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the village of Marwahin in the south of the country. This was reported by the UN press service.
“We again remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the security of UN personnel and property, and to respect the sanctity of UN premises at all times,” UNIFIL said.
The mission also recalled that the attack on a UN facility and damage to its property is a grave violation of international law and Security Council Resolution 1701. The document was adopted unanimously and is intended to end the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006 and chart a path to border security between Israel and Lebanon.
The statement also stated that the Israeli army repeatedly asked UNIFIL to vacate its positions along the Blue Line and deliberately attacked UN positions.
Despite the pressure on the mission and the country by the country’s troops, UNIFIL insisted that the peacekeepers remain in all their positions.
“We will continue to carry out our monitoring and reporting activities,” the statement said.
Let us recall that the previous Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, called on the UN to withdraw peacekeeping forces from southern Lebanon.
On October 1, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the “expansion of conflict in the Middle East” and called for a ceasefire. This happened against the backdrop of a massive Iranian missile attack on Israel, organized by Tehran in response to Israel’s operation against the Lebanese Hezbollah. Guterres was declared persona non grata in Israel.
