Presidential elections and a constitutional referendum on Moldova’s accession to the EU were held in the Republic of Moldova.
Maia Sandu is leading in the presidential elections in Moldova. The majority of voters in the referendum voted against their country joining the European Union. This was announced on Sunday, October 20, by the Central Election Commission of Moldova.
They note that 80% of the ballots have been processed. President Sandu was supported by 36% of voters. 29% voted for Alexandru Stoianog from the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova. Next is Renato Usatii, with almost 14% of the vote.
The commission also processed more than 50% of the ballots in the EU accession referendum. More than 43% of voters voted in favor, 56% – against.
The question on the ballot is: “Do you support amending the Constitution to join the Republic of Moldova in the European Union?”
According to the Central Election Commission, 51.4% or 1.54 million voters turned out for the election. The most active voters in Moldova are residents of Donduseni (a region in the north) – 50.9%, Taraclia (a region in the south) – 49.4%, Gagauzia (in the southeast of the country) – 49.4%, Ocnita ( in northeast near the border) with Ukraine) – 48.1%.
The most active voters abroad are in Italy, Russia and France, writes NewsMaker. Four polling stations abroad extended voting hours – by two hours in Bucharest and one hour in Moscow (Russian Federation) and Brasov (Romania).
In the first round of presidential elections in Moldova, the exit polls were not fixed. However, an October poll by WatchDog.MD showed that the majority of voters (35.8%) preferred Maia Sandu.
Regarding the referendum, opinion polls showed that 55.1% were ready to vote for European integration to be included in the Constitution of Moldova. 34.5% of the respondents were against it, while 7.9% responded that they were undecided.
It was previously reported that the current President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, voted in the election of the country’s new president, calling on other citizens to come out to “decide their destiny.”
We add that Moldovan authorities say they have exposed a Russian-backed operation involving 130,000 of its citizens, intended to influence decisive votes on the country’s European aspirations.
