US President Biden discussed with the leaders of Germany, France and Great Britain Vladimir Zelensky’s victory plan. The United States, which together with Germany blocked steps to join Ukraine to NATO, now seems to have no fundamental objection to simply inviting Kyiv to the Alliance.
The French publication Le Monde writes about this.
According to an unnamed European diplomat, if Kamala Harris wins the US presidential election, it can be assumed that Joe Biden will begin working on inviting Ukraine during the transition period.
Biden, Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz and Keir Starmer are seeking to coordinate responses to Ukraine’s victory plan.
This is an ambitious plan that touches on complex issues on which there is no spontaneous coincidence, says one of the diplomats in a conversation with reporters.
Currently, the United States and Germany block any prospect of NATO expansion to include Ukraine, while France and the United Kingdom are more likely to do so.
However, the French publication notes, there are signs that the Americans no longer have fundamental objections to a simple invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance.
If Kamala Harris is elected president, it is possible that President Biden could move in this direction during the transition period. If it is Trump, then the argument loses force, and the slightest initiative from Biden risks aggravating the situation, notes a European diplomatic source.
The publication’s most optimistic interlocutors believe that if the United States decides to take this step, this could lead to a change in Germany’s position.
However, NATO has Hungary and Türkiye, which will obviously try to block Ukraine’s early rapprochement with the Alliance.
