Almost all of Cuba is in darkness due to a major accident

The United States imposed an embargo on fuel and equipment exports to Cuba during the Cold War, and the main suppliers – Venezuela, Mexico and Russia – have cut their supplies in recent years.

Cuba is without electricity after one of the island’s main power plants collapsed. Millions of people were left without electricity. CNN and Reuters wrote this on Friday, October 18, citing the Cuban Ministry of Energy.

The accident occurred at the Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant in the city of Matanzas. This caused a breakdown in the national power grid.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that work continues to restore the electricity supply, but it is not yet known when it will be finished, Diario de Cuba wrote.

At the same time, the island’s 10 million population was advised to switch to strict power saving mode. All workers, except for emergency services, have been sent home. Schools and universities are closed at least until Sunday. Entertainment venues and almost all trades are also closed.

This has exacerbated the country’s energy crisis – for the past two weeks, power has been out for several hours every day in Cuba. On October 11, there was no electricity all day.

Cuba blames US sanctions for the energy crisis because it makes it difficult for the country to supply vital fuel. In addition, the damage to the power plants was a result of the devastating Hurricane Milton that passed through the region last week.

The energy crisis in Cuba is not a new problem. The island’s limited infrastructure has not received adequate maintenance for years, and regular blackouts have continued since the 1990s.

The National Security and Defense Council predicts that Russia will continue attacks on the energy system when the warming season begins.
