In the last exchange of prisoners of war, 34 Azov soldiers who defended Mariupol returned home. The commander of the Azov brigade, Denis “Redis” Prokopenko, wrote about this on Saturday, October 19, on Facebook.
“At a time of intense fighting, such news gives the personnel of the 12th Azov Brigade and boosts the morale of another 34 Azov soldiers who returned to Ukraine from Russian captivity,” he said.
According to him, the returning soldiers defended Mariupol for 86 days, left the territory of Azovstal by order and spent 2.5 years in Russian captivity. Prokopenko emphasized that “thanks to the soldiers of the Mariupol garrison, Ukraine was able to withstand the first blow in the spring of 2022.”
“I congratulate you on your native land and thank you for your perseverance and loyalty to the Motherland. The personnel of the brigade depended on each of you and did everything possible to fill the exchange fund with the Russian acquisitions,” said the commander .
He recalled that about 900 Azov fighters remain in Russian prisons and promised to do everything to ensure that all return to Ukraine.
