The European Council believes that the action of the Georgian government contradicts the values and principles on which the European Union is based.
The European Council summit on Thursday, October 17, announced the virtual suspension of Georgia’s accession to the European Union. This is stated in a document published on the website of the European Council.
It was noted that the European Council confirmed the EU’s readiness to support the Georgian people on their European path. At the same time, they once again expressed their “serious concern” about the course of action of the Georgian government, which contradicts the values and principles on which the European Union is based.
“The European Council recalls that such a course threatens Georgia’s European path and de facto stops the EU accession process. It calls on Georgia to carry out democratic, comprehensive and sustainable reforms in accordance with the fundamental principles of European integration. The European Council will continue to monitor the situation of developments,” the document said.
In addition, the European Council expects that the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia will be free and fair, and will be conducted in accordance with international standards and unimpeded access for international and national election observers.
Let’s recall that earlier the European Union decided to stop high-level meetings with representatives of the Georgian government in response to anti-European actions and rhetoric of the ruling party.
Earlier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that the pre-election situation in Georgia was more depressing than in Moldova.
