Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has denied that Ukraine is preparing to create nuclear weapons.
The Ukrainian side has never said it is preparing to develop nuclear weapons. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said this in a briefing with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday, October 17.
The head of state explained what he meant when he spoke about the Budapest Memorandum earlier. According to him, Ukraine renounced nuclear weapons, but did not receive the promised security guarantees.
“We did not say that we are preparing to create nuclear weapons or anything like that. I said that when the Budapest Memorandum was signed by the respected, powerful nuclear countries, it was written that Ukraine would give up nuclear weapons, and Ukraine will have from the respected countries, including very important countries, including Russia, China, USA at that time – territorial integrity and sovereignty This is what I said,” said Zelensky.
According to him, “this means that we gave nuclear weapons, and these people who were partners at the time, they had to give us security guarantees.”
“Therefore, we have no alternative but NATO,” Zelensky stressed.
We remind you that the German tabloid Bild wrote that the Ukrainian authorities seem to be “seriously thinking” about restoring nuclear weapons.
Zelensky, recalling a conversation with US presidential candidate Donald Trump, said that Ukraine needs NATO membership for protection, because the guarantees of the Budapest Memorandum have failed. “We choose NATO. Not nuclear weapons, we choose NATO,” the president told Trump.
