See what were the main statements made by Liam Payne about a possible One Direction reunion
Since One Direction split up in 2016 so the members could dedicate themselves to their solo careers, fans have dreamed of a reunion — and not just them, one of the boyband members has also always been open to seeing the quintet together again: Liam Payne!
There are optimistic statements from Liam since the year following the disbandment, given that, in 2017, he stated to MTV’s TRL: “I feel like this is going to happen soon, I have a feeling”, referring to a reunion on stage.
Still, the statements intensified in 2020, mainly because fans were already excited about a possible return after seeing that the group’s website and 1D’s Apple Music page had been updated, this time with the presence of Zayn Malik. This is because, in that same year, the band would celebrate 10 years of creation, as it was formed in 2010 through the music reality show “The X Factor UK”, created by the music producer Simon Cowell.
Therefore, in 2020, Payne made several statements demonstrating excitement about taking the stage alongside Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles again.
What has Liam Payne already said about a possible One Direction reunion?
At the time, the singer participated in a live broadcast on Instagram with the DJ Alessowhere he stated that the band had reconnected. “I spoke to Niall again on FaceTime today… He’s also in London. We’re trying to organize our first group FaceTime at the moment.”
Also four years ago, Liam he told People magazine in May that although he could not confirm a return, he remained “very hopeful.”
Obviously, we know it’s a really big anniversary and we definitely want to do something. I mean, it’s difficult. I can’t promise any reunion plans because it’s simply not the time now. I always attribute it to the musical language because everyone is releasing at the moment with two years of promotion. But, you know, it still feels very hopeful in that department. I’m starting to think this is going to happen at some point. So it’s exciting.”
In the same chat, he once again expressed his excitement about speaking again with those he shared space with in hits such as “What Makes You Beautiful”, “Night Changes”, “Kiss You”, “Best Song Ever”, “Midnight Memories”, “Story of My Life” and many others.
It was good to open up the channels of communication again because we hadn’t spoken in a while. And I think we all needed that after spending so much time together — just to discover ourselves as people, because we all know what we are in the band. We spent so much time together that I didn’t know where the hell I fit in when it ended. It was kind of crazy. But it was cool. It was so adorable. And it’s really nice to see that everyone turned out to be nice people, you know?”
When Alesso and Payne interviewed for MTV News, the subject also came up when the DJ asked about a possible meeting. In response, Liam confessed:
I think we are equal in terms of excitement. Where we left off as a band, we had just finished an album and weren’t able to tour, so there was always that little something that was missing,” he said. “Everyone I’ve spoken to has always come to the subject of the meeting at some point, it’s not like anyone is trying to get away from it, it’s just a matter of when.”
In 2023, new speculations emerged, as Liam told The Sun that he and the other former members of the boy band got back in touch after creating a WhatsApp group, as did British magazine OK! stated that the artist was trying hard to make the meeting happen.
Unfortunately, if the reunion occurs, Payne will not be present, as the artist died last Wednesday, 16th, after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur hotel, in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At this time, it is not known whether the fall was accidental or intentional.
