In Romania, the government approved the creation of a state-owned railway company to meet the country’s defense needs. This was reported by Euractiv.
The need to create a company capable of delivering troops, equipment, machinery and weapons in the event of military mobilization is explained by the “extraordinary events” of 2020-2023.
It is noted that the new company is legally obliged to manage Romania’s strategic transportation, giving the state reliable transportation in situations where private transportation companies may refuse or unable to provide certain train services, especially in times of crisis.
The company will also manage the delivery of humanitarian aid to conflict zones, which supports international cooperation efforts.
In addition to military needs, the company will play an important role in the transportation of essential goods such as grain, raw materials and fuel, helping to prevent potential food or energy crises.
As is known, Romania has committed to increasing military mobility by participating in the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) program and reaffirmed this commitment at the NATO summit in June 2018.
We remind you that the North Atlantic Alliance has started additional monitoring of Romania’s airspace, attracting another long-range radar surveillance aircraft (AWACS).
