Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky reported heavy fighting at the front and attempts by Russian troops to break through the defenses in the Kursk region.
Ukraine continues its operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. The President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky reported about the attempts of Russian troops to break the defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region.
Time factor
The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian troops stepped up counterattacks in Russia’s Kursk region on October 10 and 11 to try to dislodge Ukrainian forces before worsening weather conditions limited their maneuvers in the field of war
ISW predicts that Russian military commanders may be concerned that poor weather conditions in the fall of 2024 and early winter of 2024-2025 will promote trench warfare in the Kursk region and give Ukrainian troops more plenty of time to better establish themselves in the positions they hold.
“Better anchored Ukrainian troops with a wider fortress network in the Kursk region will likely further complicate Russian attempts to push Ukrainian troops back across the border.
Russian troops may feel that the window of opportunity to push Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk region with the level of manpower and equipment the Russians have provided here is closing,” the analysts wrote.
There is no quick success
Analysts believe that the Russian military command is likely seeking to quickly expel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region to free up combat capabilities for conducting priority offensive operations for the Russians in Pokrovsky direction and in the western part of the Donetsk region.
“However, Russian forces have failed to make rapid progress in the Kursk region since counter-attacks began on September 10, and the escalation of counter-attacks threatens to exhaust and degrade the very power of the conflict that the Russian military hopes to transfer to priority offensive operations in the Donetsk region, ” ISW concluded.
“The Russians are trying to break our defenses in the Kursk region for the fifth day. The guys are holding on and counterattacking,” Zelensky said on Monday.
They don’t spare people
In September, Russian troops experienced their deadliest month of the war against Ukraine, according to US analysts. The WSJ said that, according to Western intelligence estimates, Russian losses amounted to 1,200 dead and wounded per day. Journalists made it clear that Russian military successes were achieved mainly through ground attacks by infantry units, filled with prisoners who were pulled out of prisons with promises of pardon and rewards financially.
“Ukraine continues to inflict losses on Russia that are unacceptable to any country that is not a full-fledged autocracy,” the publication quoted John Nagl, a retired US Army lieutenant colonel and professor at the US Army War College, as saying.
Moreover, the Russians are now destroying their own settlements in the Kursk region with the KABs. On October 12, the General Staff reported that in the past 24 hours Russian troops had carried out 18 airstrikes with 23 air strikes on their own territory in the Kursk region.
