According to the results of the first round of parliamentary elections in Lithuania, the opposition Social Democratic Party is in the lead. Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported this on Monday, October 14, citing data from the Central Election Commission.
The Social Democrats won more than 36% of the votes. They were voted in at 594 out of 1,947 polling stations. This gives them a majority in a multi-member constituency.
The ruling party Fatherland Union – Christian Democrats of Lithuania, led by Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, is in second place – with 28%.
The second place was taken by the party of Zarya Nemunas, led by Remigijus Zemaitaitis. 12% of voters voted for a political force participating in elections for the first time.
Pre-election opinion polls indicated a possible change in government in Lithuania. Sociologists estimate that 15-18% of voters are ready to vote for the opposition. The leader of the Social Democratic Party, Member of the European Parliament Vilija Blinkevičiute, is expected to take over as Prime Minister.
The Lithuanian Seimas elects 141 representatives for four-year terms – 71 in single-member constituencies and 70 in a multi-member national constituency.
