The Chinese military posted a video on their social networks titled “Ready and waiting for battle.” It shows fighter jets, warships and a small map of Taiwan.
Taiwan’s military reported that a Chinese aircraft carrier group was near the island on Sunday, October 13. Before this, China announced military exercises around Taiwan, Reuters reports.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said a Chinese naval group led by the aircraft carrier Liaoning entered waters near the Bashi Channel, which connects the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean and separates Taiwan from the Philippines. The carrier group is expected to enter the Western Pacific.
According to Chinese military information cited by AFP, the exercise focused on increasing readiness in sea and air combat, as well as blockades of key ports and areas. As part of the exercises, it is also planned to strike land and sea targets.
A Chinese military official said the drills were a serious warning to Taiwan’s military. In response to Beijing’s actions, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense condemned the exercises and announced the deployment of its troops to the region.
This is not the first time the Chinese military has conducted exercises or conducted flights near Taiwan.
Security sources in Taiwan said ahead of the president’s speech that his speech could trigger new Chinese military exercises, which the country last held in May. Beijing called it “punishment” for Lai Qingde’s inaugural speech.
Reuters wrote that on October 13, the PRC military, which is responsible for the territory that includes Taiwan, published a video on its social networks titled “Fully ready and waiting for battle.” It shows fighter jets engaging warships, mobile missile launchers, landing vehicles and a small map of Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense later reported that China’s military had announced joint military exercises in the surrounding waters and airspace near Taiwan. The island pledged “appropriate forces to respond and defend our national sovereignty.”
Let’s recall that on October 1, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping, confirmed the desire for “reunification” with Taiwan, calling the island an inviolable territory of China.
The US has given Taiwan the largest military aid package in history.
