The Economist reports that as the front approaches Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian steel industry is under threat of destruction.
In particular, this is the largest coking coal mine, Krasnoarmeyskaya Zapadnaya, and the Pokrovsky Mining and Processing Plant, the publication writes.
It is noted that if these facilities are lost, Russia will be able to destroy the remnants of the Ukrainian steel industry. To do this, it is not even necessary to capture Pokrovsk – just turn off the power supply and block the roads leading to the factories.
In 2021, Ukraine ranked 14th in the world in steel production, but last year it dropped to 24th place. With the loss of the largest mine, where coal is mined for metallurgy, Russia will be able to “destroy the remaining steel industry in Ukraine.”
Moreover, the article says, it is not necessary to take Pokrovsk for this.
As they advance, they will try to cut off the power supply and block the main road that carries coal west to the remaining steel mills. Then they will do the same at another smaller coking coal mine 18 km north of Udobnoye, in Dobropolye, writes the British magazine.
