Meta removes fake accounts in Moldova ahead of presidential elections.
Meta Platforms said on Friday, October 11, that it had removed a network of group accounts targeting Russian-speaking Moldovans ahead of the country’s October 20 elections for violating the company’s policy on fake accounts.
The fake accounts posted criticism of Sandu, pro-European politicians and close ties between Moldova and Romania, and also supported pro-Russian parties in Moldova.
The company said it removed seven Facebook accounts, 23 pages, one group and 20 Instagram accounts for violating its “coordinated policy on inauthentic behavior.”
Earlier in Moldova, the Telegram channels of pro-Moscow figures were blocked.
The reason for the blocking was a violation of local legislation by representatives of the so-called “Shor group” – fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor.
In addition to Shor’s channel, the Telegram channel of his close ally Marina Tauber, the head of the autonomous region of Gagauzia Evgenia Gutsul and several other politicians are now unavailable.
The Eurasia channel, owned by an organization associated with Shor, and the Telegram news channel Gagauzinfo MD were also blocked.
Earlier in Moldova, a Kremlin special operation to bribe voters through Telegram was exposed.
