The European Union decided to abandon the announced deadline due to the unpreparedness of Germany, France and the Netherlands.
The European Union (EU) postponed the launch on November 10 of revised border crossing rules for foreigners, including Ukrainians. This was announced by European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Jogansson after a meeting of EU interior ministers.
The European Commissioner emphasized that it was finally decided to abandon the previously agreed November 10 launch date. It is likely that the concept of a gradual rollout of a new system for citizens crossing EU borders will be approved.
It was decided to abandon the launch date for the new EES (Entry/Exit System) IT system announced for November 10 due to the unpreparedness of Germany, France and the Netherlands. These countries account for almost 40% of all passenger traffic in the EU.
The EU previously planned to change the rules for border crossings by foreigners, including Ukrainians, from November 10. After the launch of the EES, foreigners will face the following changes: they will not have their passports stamped passport when crossing the border, but they will use biometric data – fingerprints and facial images – for identification. Registration is planned to be performed automatically through self-service terminals.
It is planned that the new system will simplify border crossing, improve security through biometric documents and help prevent the use of fake passports and combat illegal migration. This will depend on the central system that the EU-Lisa program should provide.
