For refusing to post the video, Formula, Mtavari Arkhi and TV Pirveli TV channels received fines of about 1.8 thousand dollars.
In Georgia, three television channels were fined for refusing to broadcast an election video by the ruling Georgian Dream party with footage of buildings destroyed in the war in Ukraine. The BBC reported this on Saturday, October 12.
For refusing to post the video, Formula, Mtavari Arkhi and TV Pirveli TV channels received fines of about 1.8 thousand dollars.
As you know, a video and banner of the Georgian Dream appeared on the streets of Tbilisi a month before the election. The video featured black-and-white footage of destroyed and burning buildings, infrastructure and cities in Ukraine with the slogan “No to War!”, while juxtaposed with color images of similar new and renovated buildings in Georgia with the slogan “Choose Peace.”
Banners with the same content appeared on the streets of Tbilisi on September 26. On the banners, against the background of black and white photographs from Ukraine, which suffered from the Russian invasion, the electoral numbers of four opposition forces are crossed out, and in the images of Georgia, the electoral number of the Georgian Dream is crossed out. .
The country’s ruling party appealed to the Georgian National Communications Commission with a complaint against the aforementioned TV channels, which recognized the Georgian Dream election videos as immoral and refused to broadcast them.
The commission found that the TV channels were violating the election code, and the Tbilisi City Court on Friday decided to impose financial penalties.
Mtavari TV channel’s lawyer, Tamta Muradashvili, said that the court also granted the commission’s request for the immediate implementation of the decision for the first time, which means that the TV channels are obliged to immediately broadcast the aforementioned video – regardless of whether the decision is appealed to the appellate court.
“We will not abide by this decision,” Muradashvili said.
Let us remind you that the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze does not intend to abandon the theme of the war in Ukraine in advertising for the Georgian Dream party. He said that he considers it important to compare the war in Ukraine and peace in Georgia.
The Foreign Ministry responded to the cynical statement of the Prime Minister of Georgia about the “truth” about Ukraine
