The implementation of a new control system at the borders of the European Union has been delayed.
The EU’s border control system, called the Entry and Exit System (EES), will not go live on November 10, as previously planned. There are no new terms yet. European Union Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson announced this, Radio Liberty reports.
I hope we can start as soon as possible,” he said.
It is noted that Europeans are discussing the possibility of gradual introduction of the EES system.
EU home affairs ministers met in Luxembourg to discuss migration, the EU’s visa-free regime, the Schengen area and the rollout of a new border control system. France, Germany and the Netherlands have previously said the new system is not yet stable enough and that national tests needed to implement it have not been carried out.
As a reminder, the automated system will require travelers arriving in the bloc from non-EU countries to register their personal information, such as facial image and fingerprints, at airports.
