Victoria Roshchina, a journalist for the Ukrainian publication Hromadske and freelance writer for Ukrainskaya Pravda, imprisoned in Russia, has died.
Ukraine received official documentary confirmation from the Russian side about the death of Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchina. Human Rights Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets announced this on Thursday, October 10.
“Once again, a person died in captivity in Russia, whose presence in the prisons of the Russian Federation was confirmed by the ICRC. Why the girl died while in Russian captivity is unknown,” wrote Lubinets.
He indicated that he had already contacted the UN and the ICRC so that they could record the death of a civilian illegally detained by Russia.
“Illegal detentions and kidnappings of journalists are the Russian Federation’s weapon against freedom of speech. Russia has once again violated the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law !” the emphasis of the Ombudsman.
He noted that the journalist disappeared in VOT in August 2023, but Russia only admitted in May 2024 that he was held captive on Russian territory.
At the beginning of the mass invasion of Ukraine, Victoria Roshchina worked for the publication Hromadske and wrote reports from the temporarily occupied territories.
On March 7, 2022, his car was shot up. A week later, the Russian military detained him in the village of Vasilyevka, but the journalist escaped. On March 11, 2022, the Russian FSB captured Roshchina. According to him, he was caught while he was on his way to Mariupol. He said that he was kept in Berdyansk for a week.
In October 2023, it became known that the Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchina, who received an award for her reporting on the war in Ukraine, disappeared in the temporarily occupied territories. Relatives and friends reported that they had lost contact with him since August 3, 2023.
In May 2024, Russia admitted that it captured Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchina, who disappeared in the temporarily occupied territories in August of last year.
There are 31 Ukrainian journalists in captivity in Russia. This is what the executive director of the public organization Media Initiative for Human Rights said.
