Warsaw has said it cannot agree to Ukraine’s accession to the EU until the countries resolve disputes over events in Volyn during World War II.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamisz said Warsaw will not rest until the issue of the Volyn tragedy is finally resolved. The PAP reported this on Tuesday, October 8.
Journalists note that Kosiniak-Kamysh took part in a ceremony marking the 84th anniversary of the creation of the Peasant Battalion, held in front of the monument to the soldiers of the Peasant Battalion and the People’s Women’s Union in Warsaw.
At the same time, he emphasized that he “always remembers history and heroes, regardless of whether he is a co-ruler or in the opposition.”
“I want to make a promise to all of us here, a promise to Poland, a promise to my countrymen: we will not rest until we honor the memory of the victims of the genocide in Volyn,” the Polish leader said. Ministry of Defense.
He added that he does not remember the tragedy “to enrage the wound, because you cannot pick at wounds that have not healed.”
The issue of exhumations of the victims of the Volyn tragedy will be considered as part of the opening of the first chapter in negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the EU.
