The European Union has stopped meeting with the pro-government Georgian Dream government.
Brussels also responded to the anti-European actions and rhetoric of the ruling party of Georgia. Back in June, there was an internal discussion between EU member states regarding what should be the approach to the current Georgian government, which is unfriendly towards the European Union. This was stated by the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky, reports Ekho Kavkaza.
Additionally, we discussed how we should approach anti-Western and anti-European narratives, propaganda and conspiracy theories, and decided not to have any high-level contacts with the current Georgian government. That is why in recent months there have been no high-level visits to Georgia, nor high-level meetings with representatives of the Georgian authorities in Brussels, he said.
According to the ambassador, the European Union is ready to work with a government “ready to join the EU.” However, the path to the bloc will be closed for Tbilisi if Georgia becomes a one-party state, the authorities will prohibit political opposition, and human rights in this country will not be protected.
Let us recall that on July 9, the EU suspended the integration process of Georgia due to the law on “foreign agents” adopted by the Georgian parliament. The law was passed in May despite opposition opposition and mass protests.
