The parties pledged to ensure the safe and effective operation of the existing military base in Diego Garcia, which is key to regional and global security.
The UK government has made a historic decision to transfer sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius after decades of disputes, reiterating its commitment to maintaining a military base in Diego Garcia. Ukrinform writes about this in connection with a joint statement of the prime ministers of both countries.
For 50 years, Mauritius has requested the transfer of islands located in the Indian Ocean to it.
The UK will formally cede sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago after a long-running dispute.
“Today, the Prime Ministers of the Republic of Mauritius and the United Kingdom confirmed the achievement of a historic political agreement on sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, including the largest island of Diego Garcia,” the statement said.
The parties pledged to ensure the safe and effective operation of the existing military base in Diego Garcia, which is key to regional and global security.
Thus, for 99 years, the UK will have the sovereign rights and powers of Mauritius necessary for the continued operation of the base.
Since 1971, the Chagos Archipelago has been home only to American military personnel in Diego Garcia.
Earlier it was reported that Ukraine and Mauritius signed an agreement on a visa-free regime between the countries.
