Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has banned UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres from entering the country.
Reuters reports that the Foreign Minister explained this decision by Guterres’ inability to “unequivocally condemn” Iran’s massive missile attack on Israel.
After Iran launched missiles at Israel on the evening of October 1, the UN Secretary General said:
I condemn the expansion of the conflict in the Middle East, escalation upon escalation. This must stop. We need a ceasefire.
Let us recall that the head of the Israeli government, Benjamin Netanyahu, promised that Iran would pay for a missile attack on Israel. Iran said the consequences of any retaliation would be “significant destruction.”
As the US expressed support for Israel, Iran’s military said American direct intervention against Tehran would provoke a “strong attack” by Iran on its “bases and interests” in the region.
EU diplomacy chief Borrell said the EU condemns Iran’s attack on Israel and calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East. He wrote about this on the social network X.
At the same time, oil prices jumped 5% on fears of a wider war between Israel and Iran. Today, the UN Security Council has scheduled a meeting on the situation in the Middle East.
