Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili did not sign anti-LGBT bills.
At the same time, Zurabishvili did not veto, so the speaker of parliament will be able to sign the document. And even in this case, the ruling Georgian Dream party could override the veto.
Georgian Dream claims to want to “protect family values,” but in reality it restricts the rights of the LGBT community and introduces censorship, writes the Georgian TV channel Sova.
The Venice Commission prepared a critical opinion on the homophobic bill and recommended that it not be adopted.
Let us recall that on September 17, the law “On Family Values and the Protection of Minors” against the LGBT community was approved by parliament in the third reading and unanimously adopted by a majority of 84 votes.
The adopted law and amendments prohibit same-sex marriage, adoption of children by same-sex couples and transgender transition, as well as LGBT propaganda in education and the media. In fact, they repeat similar Russian laws that have already been adopted.
In addition, measures “promoting the LGBT way of life” are prohibited. A special commission will ensure that in any works of art, in particular in literature, films, performances or drawings, the authors do not promote “same-sex relationships”.
The package of legislative amendments against LGBT people initiated by the ruling party of Georgia provides for administrative fines in the amount of 800 to 4,000 lari (about 300-1,400 dollars) and criminal liability.
