Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, 26, of Columbus, Ohio, was arrested in 2021 and pleaded guilty to making threats last February.
According to a Justice Department report, Rodriguez called a reproductive health clinic on April 11 last year and threatened to kill a patient who wanted an abortion.
In another call on the same day, he announced that he was going to send a bomb to the medical center and suggested that the staff close the clinic.
The convict admitted that he had violated the Law on Freedom of Access to Polyclinics, which since 1994 has made threats, intimidation and attacks on centers providing medical services, including abortions, as a federal crime.
“Patients seeking services reproductive health they must be able to do so without violence or threats,” Deputy Attorney General Kristen Clark said in a statement.
Clarke said the proposal sent a “strong signal” that Ministry of Justice protects safe access to clinics reproductive health.
The proposal came at the height of a national debate about the right to freely terminate a pregnancy.
A ruling violating the right to abortion
The Supreme Court with a conservative majority ruled last Friday to strip federal protection abortionhas been operating since 1973.
This decision does not ban medical abortions, but leaves the power to regulate them in the hands of the states.
At least seven conservatively ruled states have banned abortion since the Supreme Court ruling was issued, and others are expected to join them in the coming weeks.
