Poland has signed a $ 1.83 billion contract to buy 32 AW149 helicopters from Italian company Leonardo. This was reported by Reuters on July 1, citing the head of the country’s Defense Ministry, Mariusz Blaszczak.
According to the Polish minister, the first multi-purpose helicopter will be delivered to the army next year. They will be built at the plant in Svidnik, part of the Leonardo group.
The contract includes logistics and training, including simulators.
As Blaszczak asserted, Poland is modernizing its armed forces in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Helicopters AW149 will be used for the transportation of soldiers, air support, evacuation and search operations. They will also be equipped with anti-tank missiles.
The AW149 is a multipurpose helicopter adapted for both day and night missions. It is operated by two pilots and can accommodate 19 passengers. It has a flight range of more than 900 kilometers and can reach speeds of more than 300 kilometers per hour.
