The United States must prepare for a long-term confrontation, recognizing that Russia has a centuries-long history of violent imperialism against its neighbors, in Europe and the world.
The US Helsinki Commission published a report calling on Washington to abandon post-Cold War policies in its relations with Russia and recognize Moscow as a continuing threat to global security. The Hill reported it.
The report notes the need to rethink America’s strategy toward Russia, as it has done toward China, and reallocate resources accordingly. One of the main aspects of the strategy is support for Ukraine in the war against Russia, including large-scale military and humanitarian aid.
In addition, the commission calls for allowing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to carry out strikes on Russian territory using American weapons.
The priority direction of the report’s strategy is to ensure Ukraine’s success in the defense war against Russia.
The publication said the report’s recommendations go beyond the policies of the Biden administration and contradict the positions of former President Donald Trump and his supporters in Congress.
The head of the Helsinki Committee, Republican Joe Wilson, rejected the possibility that Trump entered into an agreement with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
“I have no doubt that Donald Trump is convinced of the disloyalty of war criminal Putin,” Wilson said in an interview with The Hill.
One of the report’s conclusions is that “the United States must prepare for a long-term confrontation, recognizing that Russia has a century-long history of violent imperialism against its neighbors, Europe and the world.”
The report notes Russia’s violations of international law, including the seizure of Crimea and the 2014 occupation of Donbass; a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and an invasion of Georgia in 2008; the Kremlin’s targeting of political dissidents at home and abroad; interference in American and other democratic elections.
The Helsinki Report recommends that nuclear threats from Russia should not be ignored, but advises that the problem should be addressed with “common sense.”
The report also advocates full US engagement with allies around the world, especially countries “on the front lines of Russian aggression, manipulation, and coercion.”
The document includes calls for increased military support, economic investment, and more.
In the past, the commission emphasized that the United States should allow Ukraine to launch attacks with American weapons on Russian forces on the borders of the Russian Federation.
Earlier, the UK said that Kyiv has the right to use weapons provided by London to strike targets on Russian territory, as Moscow is attacking Ukrainian territory. After that, the Kremlin complained of “direct escalation.”
