Berne said it supports the Sino-Brazilian initiative because it offers an alternative to “warlike rhetoric.”
Switzerland says it supports China and Brazil’s “peace initiative” to end the war, despite the fact that it contains no reference to the UN Charter and makes no direct mention of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. This was said by the representative of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Nicolas Bidot, Blick reports.
He noted that Switzerland supports the Sino-Brazilian initiative, as it calls for a ceasefire and a political solution to the “conflict” and offers an alternative to the “war-like remarks” made at the UN by both Ukrainian sides and Russian.
At the same time, Bidault emphasized the importance of referring to the UN Charter in any peace initiatives regarding Ukraine, noting that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke about it in a speech to the UN Security Council.
Bidault said Switzerland was the only Western country invited to the meeting, which the two countries held on Friday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Let’s remember that China, Brazil and some other countries of the Global South agreed to create the “Friends of Peace” platform, within the framework of which they plan to promote the peaceful resolution of the “crisis in Ukraine.” Hungary also announced that it is joining the Sino-Brazilian Friends of Peace initiative.
President Vladimir Zelensky criticized from the UN rostrum the “peace plans” advanced by China and Brazil.
