The Royal Court of England and Wales in the London borough of Southwark sentenced two climate activists of the Just Stop Oil movement (Just Stop Oil) to real imprisonment, who poured soup on the famous painting “Sunflowers” by the artist Vincent van Gogh at the National Gallery in London. So, the court jailed Phoebe Plummer for two years, and Anna Holland for 20 months for causing unlawful harm.
The agency recalls that environmental activists in October 2022 threw cans of Heinz tomato soup at Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh’s work Sunflowers, and then glued themselves to the wall below the painting.
Prosecutors said the soup caused up to £10,000 worth of damage to the painting’s frame.
The painting itself, which was behind a protective screen, remained unharmed and was returned to the exhibition later that day.
It was also noted that hours after the court’s verdict was announced, three Just Stop Oil activists again poured tomato soup on Van Gogh’s painting “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery in London. At the same time, they attacked another painting from the same series by a Dutch artist, which was brought to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a temporary exhibition. Both paintings were not damaged because they were protected by glass. Activists were arrested.
