When Beijing says it wants to end the conflict, but at the same time allows its companies to help Putin continue his aggression, then “something doesn’t add up.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed US concerns about China’s support for Russia’s defense industrial base. He said this in talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday, September 27, noting that “something is not adding up” in Beijing’s rhetoric about peace in Ukraine, Reuters reports.
Blinken added that he asked about China’s dangerous and destabilizing actions in the South China Sea and discussed improving communication between the US and Chinese militaries.
At the news conference, Blinken said he and Wang Yi also discussed ways to stop the flow of drugs into the United States and the dangers posed by artificial intelligence.
The Secretary of State said that about 70% of Russia’s imported mechanical equipment and 90% of microelectronics come from China and Hong Kong, and that this helps Moscow produce missiles, armored vehicles and ammunition needed to continue the war.
“Therefore, when Beijing says that, on the one hand, it wants peace, wants to see the end of the conflict, but, on the other hand, allows its companies to take actions that actually help Putin continue in his aggression, then something doesn’t add up,” he told Blinken. .
This week, the White House and the European Union said they were deeply concerned by media reports that Russia had established a weapons program in China to develop and manufacture long-range attack drones for use in war. Earlier on Friday, Wang declined to comment on a Reuters report when asked by a reporter at UN headquarters
Blinken said that “pressure on Iran, North Korea and China … to stop providing arms, artillery, equipment and other support” to Russia is critical to achieving lasting peace in Ukraine.
Let’s remember that China, Brazil and some other countries of the Global South agreed to create the “Friends of Peace” platform, within the framework of which they plan to promote the peaceful resolution of the “crisis in Ukraine.”
