Local services are reporting flooding in large areas and, as a result, power outages in millions of residential areas.
Category 4 Hurricane Helen struck the southern United States, killing at least 40 people in four states. The AP agency reported this on Friday, September 27.
About 4 million homes and businesses were found to be without power Friday morning in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
In one Florida county, five people died because they didn’t evacuate in time.
More deaths were reported in Georgia and the Carolinas, including two firefighters in South Carolina who died when a tree fell on their fire truck.
Forecasters expect the storm to continue to weaken as it moves through Tennessee and Kentucky. Rain is also expected in the Appalachian Mountains, which could lead to landslides and flash flooding.
Hurricane Helen was previously reported to have hit the Florida coast, making it the strongest hurricane to hit Florida’s Big Bend region.
