Duda emphasized that Ukraine should reach an agreement with Poland on complex issues, including historical issues.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said blocking Ukraine’s entry into the European Union is in line with the policies of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. At the same time, Ukraine must find an agreement with Poland on complex issues, including historical issues. He said this in an interview with Polsat News.

“I tried to act in a way that did not create points of tension between Warsaw and Kiev… It was not easy because there are complex problems between us. But I also spoke about these issues with President Zelensky, and the best an example of this is the presence of the president in Lutsk on the anniversary of the Volyn massacre,” said Duda.

He added that reaching an agreement with Poland on all complex issues, including historical issues, is also for the benefit of Ukraine.

The Volyn tragedy or Volyn massacre, as it is called in Poland, was one of the bloodiest episodes of the Ukrainian-Polish conflict during World War II in Volyn. In the spring of 1943, the Regional Council of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) in Volyn decided to expel the local Poles. This decision was justified by the need to prevent the plans of the leading Polish political forces to return Western Ukrainian lands to post-war Poland. According to Polish estimates, during the tragedy in Volyn, at least 35 thousand people (mostly Polish peasants) died on the Polish side, and up to several thousand on the Ukrainian side. Ukrainian researchers believe that Poles exaggerate the number of their victims.

Let’s remember that the previous Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk threatened “not to let Ukraine into the EU” because of differences of opinion about the tragedy in Volyn.
