Despite Russia’s objections, the UN adopted a document that, according to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, “opens up new opportunities and opportunities in the name of peace and security.”

Despite Russian opposition, the UN reform plan developed under German leadership was approved at the New York Summit. The head of the UN General Assembly, Philemon Young, on Sunday declared the Pact for the Future adopted. Deutsche Welle reported this on Sunday, September 22.

At the same time, it was noted that Russia distanced itself from the agreement, which should have been adopted unanimously. At the beginning of the agreement approval ceremony, the representative of Moscow – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Vershinin – was asked to speak outside the plan and announced the need to make further changes to the text of document, previously agreed upon. during the consultation months. Thus, he questioned the formal approval of the document by all 193 countries, which should be carried out without a vote.

Subsequently, Vershinin threatened to “distance himself from the consensus on this document” if the Russian amendment was not included in the text of the Pact for the Future. He said that countries that were not satisfied with the compromise version of the agreement were not given the opportunity for further discussions.

After that, the representative of Congo introduced the so-called motion for non-trial and 143 countries voted not to consider Russia’s request and thus rejected it. In addition to Russia, it was opposed by Belarus, Nicaragua, North Korea and Syria.

Later, participants at the UN summit officially adopted the Pact for the Future. According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the document “opens new opportunities and opportunities in the name of peace and security.” This is an important step towards reforming international cooperation and towards a fairer world, he added.

Let’s remember that the United States initiated major changes in the United Nations.

Subsequently, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that the reform of the UN Security Council should include the expansion of membership, the abolition of the veto power for any state and the expulsion of any member involved in an “illegal war” such as Russian invasion of Ukraine.
