LNG terminals should fulfill their first objective: to diversify gas import routes and allow the EU to cut off gas supplies from Russia, rather than the other way around.
In a joint address, the heads of the EU affairs commissions of the parliaments of the Baltic countries and Poland reported that the European Union should complete the import of liquefied natural gas from Russia as soon as possible. Postimees newspaper wrote this on Friday, September 20.
“By continuing to buy liquefied natural gas from Russia, the European Union remains dependent on a state that uses energy resources as a hybrid weapon and means of manipulation. This weakens the unity of the EU and reduces public confidence,” the deputies note in a letter given to the BNS and note that every euro paid by Russia helps finance the war against Ukraine and is a direct threat to the EU.
According to the representatives, imports from Russia should be completely stopped by political will. They added that existing and under construction liquefied natural gas terminals should fulfill their initial purpose: to diversify gas import routes and allow the EU to stop importing of gas from Russia, rather than the other way around.
“These capacities should not be a hole through which Russian gas can reach Europe,” said the heads of the commissions.
The signatories called on the European Commission, the European Parliament, the parliaments and the governments of the EU member states to act quickly to achieve the European Commission’s goal of setting January 1, 2027 as the deadline for the last completion of gas imports from Russia.
Let us recall that Russia, against the backdrop of Western sanctions, has assembled a shadow fleet to transport its oil around the world, and now there is growing evidence that Moscow has begun to do the same for liquefied natural gas.
