The reason may be the authoritarian policy of the pro-government party and the decline of democracy in the country.
The European Union is ready to suspend the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens due to a serious gap in relations between Brussels and official Tbilisi. Politico reported this on Thursday, September 19, citing an unnamed representative of the European Commission.
The interlocutor confirmed that if the ruling Georgian Dream party continues its authoritarian course, all response options are possible, “including a potential temporary suspension of the visa liberalization procedure.”
“As part of the dialogue on visa liberalization between the EU and Georgia and the corresponding Action Plan, Georgia had to achieve specific indicators, in particular ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and preventing discrimination,” he added.
Also, the representative of the European Commission noted that in the event of the development of “events that pose a risk to the internal security of the Schengen area, as well as in the event of a further decline in democracy in Georgia,” an appropriate assessment will be done.
Let’s recall that in August the European Commission warned Georgia against banning opposition parties.
